Building a vacation home from 500 miles away is a daunting task, but working with Jeff and Bill of The Building Company was an absolute pleasure. The workmanship was outstanding, the responsiveness was superlative, and the entire project came in on budget. We had known Jeff for 15 years before we started construction of our home, and during that time he continually informed us of the ever-changing conservation laws affecting our waterfront property. Over the years, we visited many homes that Jeff was building and we were always impressed with the quality of the workmanship and Jeff's dedication to the complete satisfaction of his customers.
Jeff helped us select an excellent architect and introduced us to many of the suppliers and subcontractors who would be working on the construction of our home. Prior to the start of construction, Jeff and Bill made sure that we had a clear understanding of the construction timetable and the deadlines that we would face in terms of making various decisions (windows, doors, appliances, lighting, flooring, landscaping, etc.).
During the construction phase, we received constant updates, including regular digital photos, and our monthly visits to the site were always extremely well coordinated. We considered ourselves fairly meticulous, but it quickly became clear that Jeff and Bill were equally as concerned with the total quality of the project. As the time came to make various decisions concerning lighting and decorating, they provided us with many websites featuring multiple options and spent whatever time was needed to assist us in the decision-making process. When we had an idea for improving the design of the home in mid-stage, they were quick to embrace the idea; when we had less inspired ideas, they gently led us in better directions. When construction ended, we were disappointed that we would not be seeing Jeff and Bill on a daily basis.

Jeff gave us an estimate of 10 to 12 months for completion; 10 months later it was completed. This was great because we enjoyed the summer of 2002 in our new home. The quality of the work was exceptional. We were very pleased with the workmanship and detail of the finished product. Everyone involved did a great job. We had no problems during the construction and the very few that we had after our home was completed were addressed as they appeared. "The Building Company" is an organization of quality and integrity. We had a home built by them in 1990, on a Cape bluff with 50 to 60 mph winds and horizontal rain. To have it last as well as it has, is an accomplishment worth noting. We would certainly contract with them in the future were we to build again, and we recommend the company without hesitation.

(Of note: if your builder is not using Shepley – find another builder.) "The Building Company" continues to service our needs post-construction and we have a friendly relationship. There were no financial surprises – all was within budget.
We worked on a cost plus contract with "The Building Company" and there were no surprises. We did our homework and they gave honest and appropriate estimates, including all subs. Our project was a gut to studs makeover, so there could have been many of unexpected costs.
